Queen Christina

January 23, 2015

We were invited to see Queen Christina, a dance performance in the Swedish Royal Palace church by our friends Anna Bojner and Mats Liljefors, conductor and Artistic Director of Music at the Royal Palace.

The performance is part of a series started by Mats and Philippe Beaussant in 2011 called Young Music at the Castle creating European cultural projects with scientific seminars, concerts and other events in five different countries.

The palace church was a stunning setting to showcase the performance about Queen Christina's life, travels, and love for music and dance.  Even though everything was in Swedish (and we still struggle to understand it) we completely understood the story through the dance performance.

The hour long performance featured dancers from BASE23, a Stockholm dance academy, and a variety of music from Danny Elfman to Cirque du Soleil to "Losing My Religion" by R.E.M.

Queen Christina of Sweden was very progressive for the 1600's...
  • became queen at the age of seven when her father died (she was officially crowned in 1650)
  • ended the 30 Years War in 1648 (Treaty of Westphalia)
  • abdicated in 1654
  • converted to Catholicism in 1655
  • advocate for tolerance, open borders, freedom of belief and expression and women's independence
  • buried in St. Peter's Basilica
