Legoland - Billund, Denmark

Thursday/Friday - April 17/18 - On Wednesday afternoon we flew from Copenhagen to Billund, Denmark, a 45 minute flight vs. a train ride and 40 minute bus ride (or a three hour drive).

The original Legoland, located in Billund, Denmark, opened in 1968 next to the original Lego factory (tours of the factory book a year out, at least!).  Legoland is a small scale amusement park open from mid-April through the first weekend of November.  In April, the park opens at 10am and closes at 6pm (with rides stopping at 5pm).

Two days were perfect to do and see everything we wanted to (especially with the early closing time).  The girls are the perfect age for Legoland but I would say Gabby is near the top end of the age for appreciating everything.

Of course we spent some time in the Lego shop where the girls bought Lego people, Lego bricks and a few more Lego sets to add to our own Legoland at home.
in case you have any old Legos laying around...
these two love a spinning ride!
Sofia's worse nightmare... sharks in the water!
we'll be with you in Amsterdam in August, BEZ!
Grauman's Chinese Theater, Hollywood
Audra and Sofia giggled about the giant duck on the lawn of the U.S. Capital!
driving school... Gabby immediately rear-ended Sofia
The first day we arrived at Legoland, Gordon made reservations for the girls at the driving school... the age top age limit is 13.  Kids are given country flags (made out of Legos, of course) to identify their language, our girls were the only English speakers.  As they drive around someone is giving instructions in Dutch, Swedish, English, etc. (impressive!).
Sofia observing the rules of the road... she said she was so nervous the entire time, but had fun!
Gordon had as much fun watching the girls as the girls had driving around
each girl received an EU drivers license
Audra and Gabby on the X-treme Racer ride
One of Gabby's and Audra's favorite rides was the Ice Pilots School.  The ride is modeled after an air freight company that delivers supplies to remote regions in Canada. Riders get to pick their flight configuration on a touch-screen, the ride itself is an electronic arm that, once you're strapped in, will move, swoop, and spin you around according to what you programmed.  Very cool.

Legoland's new ride,  'Ghost - the Haunted House' was declared underwhelming by Gordon and Gabby.
Gabby's favorite roller coaster - the Polar X-plorer

The restaurants in Legoland are family friendly buffets. We had lunch both days at the Polar Pizza & Pasta restaurant because everyone was happy... and we were usually at that end of the park where the four big rides/roller coasters are.

The Billund airport is directly across the road from Legoland.  There is truly nothing else around this flat expanse of Danish farmland... just airport, Legoland and Landlandia (next blog post).  Everything is walkable but it is necessary to take a taxi (or rent a car) to get from the airport to the hotel because it's a long way around to the entrance of the airport.
