Budapest - Buda Castle/Matthias Church - 5 of 6

Buda Castle, formerly know as the Royal Palace and the Royal Castle built on Castle Hill, was originally built in 1265 and has a long history of various kings, rulers, additions, renovations, neglect, periods as a convent and university.

Heavy fighting during WWII largely destroyed the palace.  After the war a large archeological project (1950-66) began to reconstruct the palace based on the remains of the medieval castle.  The communist government chose to modernize the Royal Palace to change the appearance from the former regime.

We took a bus to Buda Castle to explore and wound our way past Matthias Church and the Fisherman's Bastion to the bottom of the hill.  This Unesco World Heritage Site can also be reached using the Castle Hill Funicular which runs from the Chain Bridge the castle.

This version of Matthias Church was built in the last half of 13th century, originally named after the Virgin Mary, re-named after King Matthias in the 1800's.  It was badly damaged during WWII and used as a camp for Germans and Soviets.  The most recent restoration took place from 2006-2013.
