Day Two - Copenhagen

Monday, April 14 - Another misty, 'moisty' morning (sorry, inside family joke... a line from a poem I wrote in elementary school)... chilly and windy.
We started with Christiansborg Slot (Palace) on an island surrounded by canals in the middle of Copenhagen.  The current palace was constructed from 1907-1928 and is home to the Danish Folketing (a.k.a. parliament), Prime Minister's Office and the Supreme Court as well as used by the Royal Family for official functions.
The riding complex, located in front of the palace, was built from 1738-1745 and is the only thing that exists from the original Christianborg Palace.  Royal horses have been stabled and trained here for over 250 years.
After the palace we wandered the heart of Copenhagen and just happened to notice the underwater, bronze sculpture near Gammel Strand - The Merman with 7 Sons by Suste Bonnen, 1992.  Legend is a woman fell in love with a merman, agreed to live with him under the sea and bore him seven sons.  One day she heard church bells ringing, returned to land and never went back.  The merman is holding his infant son in his arms surrounded by his other six sons.  Really, no mystery as to why she didn't return! Yes, it's a bit eerie and spooky, but I love the unique setting.
St. Nikolaj Church - now contemporary art center and restaurant (the current menu was very Scandinavian, i.e. fish, herring, etc.)
We stumbled upon the Guinness World Records Museum (Østergade 16), Gabby was excited even though I did point out it is a museum.  Sofia was freaked out at the first display, made it through a couple more, then called it quits.  I happily took one for the team and left with her.

I did have time to note this Guinness World Record I think we can easily beat...

Largest collection of Converse Shoes belongs to Joshua Mueller of Lakewood, United States, with 403 different pairs of Converse shoes; which he has been collecting since 1991.  What do you think Marshall?!

While Gordon and Gabby finished up the only acceptable museum to Gabby, Audra, Sofia and I discovered Hotel Chocolat across the street.

Hotel Chocolat was started by British entrepreneurs, Angus Thirlwell and Peter Harris 20 years ago.  Their concept:  luxury chocolate making and retailing with cocoa growing. They describe their chocolate as deeply authentic (pioneering a ‘less sugar, more cocoa’ approach) with a witty, fashionable edge.

All I know is the boutique was lovely and the sample of raspberry and lime 'chocolate' eggs were amazing!  Sofia and I were lucky the sample person kept changing, so we kept lining up!
Happy Wall is an analog interactive pixel screen consisting of almost 2000 wooden boards that can be opened and closed to reveal color blocks.  Happy Wall allows the public to actively creative temporary artwork in the center of Copenhagen.

Happy Wall was created by Thomas Dambo, a Danish artist with a master in design, who creates with old thrown away materials.  He hopes to inspire others to play with the world's leftovers - www.thomasdambo.com.  Visit his website to see some of his other fun creations!
If it hadn't been a cold, wet, blustery day and we hadn't been on a mission to find smorrebrod.... the girls could have stayed and played for a while.
Finally!  We located a restaurant with smørrebrød, Nyhavns Faergekr.

Smørrebrød is a Danish open faced sandwich, usually starting with a piece of buttered rye bread and topped with a smorgasbord (pun intended) of toppings... many toppings are fish but really anything goes.  We tried four different smørrebrøds topped with fish cakes, chicken salad and bacon, roast beef, fried brie with cloudberry jam (a very Scandinavian jam).
Nyhavn street/canal
After lunch we took a Canal Tour Copenhagen  We departed from Nyhavn canal and saw many Copenhagen highlights: Christianborg Palace, the Old Stock Exchange, Danish Architecture Center, Nordatlantens Brygge, Royal Danish Playhouse, Opera House, Trekroner Fortress, Kastellet, the Little Mermaid, Gefions Fountain, Amalienborg Palace, Christiania, Our Saviours Church, the Black Diamond, the National Museum.

Boarding the boat we were each issued ear buds because the tour offers information in six different languages.  It was an hour well spent - a perfect warm, dry way to rest our tired feet, see the highlights of Copenhagen and pick up some Danish trivia:
  • Denmark claims the oldest national flag in the world, said to have been dropped from heaven...
  • Oldest navy, Denmark
  • World's oldest monarchy, Denmark
  • Hans Christian Anderson was from Denmark, he wrote almost 200 fairy tales as well as other books and poems
  • Greenland and the Faroe Islands belong to Denmark but have autonomous self-rule
  • Ghana was once a Danish colony
  • One of the first countries to abolish slavery, Denmark
  • Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson was the King of Denmark in the late 900's.  Ericsson, invented Bluetooth technology and named it after the late king because of his ability to make opposing parties communicate with each other.  The Bluetooth logo is the combination of the Nordic runes for his initials H (Runic letter ior.svg) and B (Runic letter berkanan.svg).  A statue of Harald "Bluetooth" Gormsson, holding a cell phone in one hand and a laptop in the other, is located in Lund, Sweden (site of a large Ericsson research facility).

Christianshavn canal
Our Saviors Church
Frederiksholms canal... very narrow, low and a tight turn, the canal boat has to touch the rubber tires on the canal wall on the other side of the bridge before it can turn
Børsen, Copenhagen's old Stock Exchange (used until 1974)... well known for it's spire - the tails of four dragons intertwined together

Dinner was at Mother, an Italian restaurant specializing in sour dough, wood-fired pizza in Copenhagen's Kød Byen neighborhood.  The place was packed when we arrived around 7p.m. but luckily we got a table in about 20 minutes. The pizza was wonderful, Gordon and I were happy campers, but it was not exactly the girls' 'cup of tea'.

the kitchen in the center of the restaurant is part of the action and atmosphere

the girls were entertained watching the pizza maker...
