Kiruna, Sweden

Approximately 15km west of the Icehotel, 18,000 people live in Kiruna, the northernmost town in Sweden.  What keeps Kiruna on the map is the large iron ore mine in operation for the past 130+ years and tourism, especially the Icehotel.  Due to the extensive mining over the years the ground under the city is unstable and the entire city of Kiruna is to be relocated 3km to the east.  New town infrastructure work began in 2007, but the work of moving the actual town is scheduled to start this Spring, 2014.

best pizza in Kiruna
massive snow plow - just imagine what the winters are like!
fun Swedish word, farthinder = speed bump
ask anyone in Kiruna who has the best burgers... Empes, in business since the 1940's, take away only
so these sleds are not unique to the Icehotel!
Two more good restaurants we tried in Kiruna:  Arctic Thai and The Bishops Arms.  Arctic Thai has all the standard Thai dishes, order at the counter and have a seat.  The Bishops Arms had three options on the lunch menu, the day we were there:  yogurt marinated chicken with fries, loaded cheese burger and a beef stew... all really good.
